Course Objectives:

  • To describe the issues specific to the work with parents of a gender variant child.
  • To describe the counter transferential issues involved in such work.
  • To be able to apply this knowledge to their own work with their counter-transference
Course Description:

Parenting gender variant children presents particular challenges both to parents’ internal development and to their tasks of parenting. In a review of the literature, parenting processes most salient to parenting gender variant youth are delineated. Parental capacity to work through internal conflicts and to see their child as separate from themselves helps them to navigate the experience of their child's unfolding gender identity in a growth promoting way for both parents and child. As a single case study, the author describes her developmental experience of parenting a gender variant child, augmented by experiences of others she has encountered personally and in her practice.
